It’s hard to say when Charli Ann Joseph started baking. Some say it was as young as three, but she remembers that by age seven she was already starting to use a chef’s knife and make icing. It seems now that the desire was always there, and with it a gift for whimsy and beauty that turned a fun project into a real accomplishment. Now, at fourteen, she knows she’s running a business, but she’s motivated principally by neither the cakes nor the money they make. What Charli Ann loves is the smiles. What she truly wants to do is to change somebody’s day and if possible, their attitude about life, and she’s discovered that her business allows her to do that twice with each order, and often on any given day. The cake itself brings joy all by itself. How could it not? A design calculated particularly to captivate the recipient, brought to life as a sweet treat topped with Charli Ann’s grandmother’s icing. But then comes blessing #2, when the money made from the cake brings a drink of clean water to a LIberian mother or mosquito nets to an orphan in the tropics. And on any given day? Charli Ann uses her cake profits to do simple acts of kindness for those she crosses paths with - whether it’s picking up the bill for the person ordering donuts for the hospital staff or paying for the lady she just met pampering herself with a mani/pedi instead of going on vacation because of her recent cancer diagnosis and treatments. The icing on the cake, literally and figuratively, is what helps Charli Ann make a person’s day brighter. |
